Question:
Civilian Military Resume Transition Writing problem ?
I will view this group with interest. I left the military in 1971 after a
tour in Vietnam and found readjustment very diffucult. The military did
nothing then to help us fit back into society. I am curious to if that has
changed and how
Answer:
--yes the military is now much better at getting people ready for
transition into "civilian" life. They still have a long way to go, but
it is much better than when my dad retired from the USAF 22 years ago.
There is a transition assistance program which includes resume writing,
LOTS of info from the VA, etc, etc, etc. I found it to be most helpful
when i retired two years ago (my only remaining problem is that i wasn't
ready to retire, I was still enjoying my self in the Navy).
-,things have changed since you got out... Now we don't get as
much as you did.. Things are changing for the worse.. So I guess there
are changes.. But when are they going to be in our favor?
-I know what you mean. I'll be retiring from the Navy in 6 mos, and will
have more than those who follow me. I am one of the last of the "50
percenters", everyone else will be earning 40% or less after 20 yrs of
service. Kids entering service today, if I remember the math correctly,
will be collecting about 29% after 20 years. It's getting pretty bad.
The only decent thing added to military benefits was the re-vamping of the
old GI Bill. Unfortunately, it came much too late for most of the people
who are eligible for retirement today.
