Question:
Anyone know of any free fax software? I have a DSL connection, Alcatel
modem, not a "fax modem". My printer is also a scanner but not a fax.
Scanning the Help Wanted ads, they often want you to fax your resume.
Anyone know of any free reliable fax software so I can send my resume/cover
letter straight from my computer?
Answer:
-I've been waiting to see if someone else was going to answer you, and at
the same time checking out various download sites but haven't found a
*free* fax software, there are plenty of "free to try" ones tho, e.g. at
www.download.com (Business - Applications). In the "olden days" when I
still had a dial-up connection, I had a fax program I liked very much
called BitWare (by Cheyenne Communications Inc.). I still have the two
installation discs, but am not sure if the program would work with
Windows versions of today and no dial-up modem.
Also, another thing that came to mind is, how are you going to dial the
recipient's fax number on a DSL connection? Or do you have access to a
site that forwards faxes? I'm not sure if a program like Skype and its
SkypeOut-feature could handle the dialing thing. Haven't checked it out
that well yet. Skype's available at www.skype.com.
Apparently they don't want ppl to email them the resumes for fear of
viruses. A Word document saved in .rtf format shouldn't contain any
macro-viruses.
-If Jill could email her resume to someone on the group in the US who has
a fax machine, could they print it and fax it to the employer on her
behalf? I would offer, but being in the UK it would mean long-distance
charges :-)
-Without a fax modem any free fax software isn't going to help you. You
can either go by a cheap fax modem which will include fax software for
about $20 or less, or sign up with one of the email to fax gateways like
www.send2fax.com. But with the sign up and usage fees at send2fax it
would be cheaper to just buy a fax modem. One other advantage however to
send2fax is that you do not tie up your phone with fax transmissions but
have faxes send to the phone number they assign to you. The incoming
faxes are then delivered to you via email.
