Question:
I am about to graduate with a degree in Computer Science -- although, my
school has a relatively decent job placement center I would like to know
about how to apply for entry level positions in companies other than the
ones which make use of the center.
For example, my school does an excellent job of placing CS graduates in south
and midwet companies (like TI, Compaq, HP, etc) but there are plenty of
companies that do not ever make use of our job placement center (MicroSoft,
for example).
What is the best way to get my resume, intention to apply for entry level
jobs made known to these companies? Is it to send a resume, transcript and
cover letter to the human resources department of the company? Or are there
better ways?
Answer:
Your college placement office should have the name and address of a
entry level hiring contact for most major companies. This info is often published
in college placement publications. If they don't have the info, you can call the
company and ask. Write a nice letter, personalized to show how your skills will
fit into the kind of work the company does. Major companies will probably be
getting thousands of such letters, of course, so don't expect a quick response.
