If someone is hired on a show as a Producer and they are a WGA member
can they also write things for the show without being under the
guild's jurisdiction?
Answer:
-If you are a guild member, any writing that you do that falls under
the category of "professional writing services" are covered by the
guild's jurisdiction. "Story Editor" for instance, is a guild
position, covered by guild rules.
Inevitably, when you have a staff of writers, the precise line of
demarcation in respect to who contributes what to which episode is
always a little gray -- and, I presume, it is fairly common for a
given writer to have input in a given episode without receiving any
credit. There's always going to be a certain amount of given and take.
You may also be a producer in addition to being a writer -- that's
fairly common in the world of television. Most executive producers
and show runners rise from the ranks of TV writers. And whatever they
earn as producers is above and beyond what they earn as writers -- but
they certainly can and do write on the shows that they produce, and
that writing, at least in principle, is governed by Guild rules.
