Work Experience

Electro-Mechanical Assembler, SoilSoup, Seattle, WA 2003

Electro-mechanical assembly and test of equipment used in the production of Liquid Compost.

Pratt & Whitney, Space Propulsion Operations, Chemical Systems Division San Jose, CA 1977-2002

Manufacturing Engineer 1998-2002 As a manufacturing engineer, I led a production team in the assembly and test of mechanical and electro-mechanical components used in igniters for the Space Shuttle Booster Separation Motor and the Minuteman III Stage 3 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile.

My responsibilities covered process safety management compliant to DOD 4145.26M Contractors' Safety Manual for Ammunition, Explosives and Related Dangerous Material.

I was also responsible for quality control where I initiated corrective actions when problems affected the quality of the product and/or the quality systems. I also used Root Cause Failure Analysis techniques to find chronic problems associated with manpower, materials, equipment, procedures, or tooling.

Using drawings and specifications, I developed and maintained bills of material and work instructions to support product flow through build cycle.

Using Microsoft Project, I monitored and coordinated production activities to meet schedule and budget constraints.

Working as a team leader and using Kaizen Lean Manufacturing methods, I set up floor and equipment layouts to promote efficient product flow through the various assembly operations.

Test Engineer 1993-1998

Developed and directed preparation and execution of comprehensive test plans, procedures and schedules for electro-explosive components and static tests of rocket motors.

Managed test facility capabilities, materials, and manpower in the performance of static testing the Tomahawk, Space Shuttle Booster Separation Motors and Minuteman III rocket engines.

Coordinated integrated testing activities with Safety, Quality, Operations, Program Management, Government Representatives and Customers.

Reviewed and evaluated test requirements to insure compliance to test plans. Provided technical direction and training for handling, assembly, test, acceptance and troubleshooting of operational test equipment used for destructive, non-destructive and rocket motor static tests.

Administered Process Hazards Analysis implementation for rocket motor test stands.

Supervisor 1985-1993

Supervised operations of a rocket engine test facility.

Team leader for mechanical and instrument technicians.

Managed safety, quality, training, ordnance receiving, shipping, storage, material handling, government tooling, manpower and scheduling.

Served as liaison between Static Test Facility and Program Management, Master Scheduling, Engineering, Safety and Quality Control.

Technician/Sr. Instrumentation Specialist 1977-1985

Using complex engineering test plans I supported rocket motor operational checkout and final acceptance testing by setting up specialized electronic test equipment, interconnecting and calibrating data acquisition and control systems.

Performed simulated tests during which I operated test consoles, data acquisition computers and control sequencers to demonstrate, record and analyze data from instruments such as strain gages, accelerometers, pressure gages, load cells, hydraulic control panels and command and control systems.

Evaluated and recorded test data during operational checkout. Diagnosed, located and troubleshot malfunctioning parts. Reworked or repaired all instruments before electronic component tests and rocket motor static tests.

Recommended changes to processes and procedures to improve test methods and quality.

Operated cranes, forklifts and specialized handling fixtures.

Devised and assembled special test tooling.

Maintained and verified calibration status of all testing and measuring equipment used in assembly and test.
