Question:
I want to know some free web service that easy to put my
resume and headshot online
Answer:
I just got some E-mail about a free web service that makes it easy to put your
resume and headshot online. I have no financial interest or in or association
with this service (other than I added my resume there) and am only sharing
this information because I think it might be useful to you.
If online casting takes off, this is the way I would like to see it done:
cheaply, professionally and in a manner that makes it easy for people who are
not familiar with HTML. I think that the services that charge $50 - $100 year
and more are a rip-off and I would like to see this new service undermine such
previous entries into on-line casting services.
It's _brand_ new and there are only a few actors on it now. It has categories
under a number of industries, but includes search criteria that are especially
suited for actors:
- distance from a given zip code
- gender
- age
- "involvement" (full-/part-time)
- years of experience
- ethnicity
- eye/hair color
- height/weight/bust/waist/hips
The search form for actors is at:
http://www.deevana.com/BroadwayHollywood/
The "catch" is that they make money by selling banner ads on their pages
(although they don't put ads on your specific page, they reserve the right to
do so in the future).
It's real easy if you already have a scanned photo, but they'll scan a photo
for you for $5. See http://www.deevana.com/SendPhoto/ for more information
on this service.
Here's how to set up your page:
- Prepare your scanned photo. It should be a JPG (JPEG) file of no more
than about 20k bytes and no larger than 400 pixels high or wide. (Use
your photo-editing software to put it in this format before starting.)
You can also upload sound clips! (The current limit for all text, images
and sound is about 11 Mb, but there's no guarantee it will stay that
large.)
- If you don't already have a resume online, create a text file of your
resume or, if you're HTML-savvy, an HTML file. (My profile doesn't
include my resume, but I put in the HTML to link to the page that includes
my resume.)
NOTE: I recommend that you NOT put your direct phone number or
residential address in the profile, though a voice-mail number would be
smart.
- Go to this page to create your profile and enter your details:
http://www.deevana.com/create
- WARNING: Right now there is no documented way to un-specify an image file,
so make sure you don't give it two files when you ultimately want only
one.
- That's it! Edit it as frequently as you like for free!
To see what I did, go the www.deevana.com home page and enter "danorton" in
the "deevana.com ID" field and press "Go".
My biggest complaint is that they don't provide a URL that will get directly
to your profile page. They say to "promote your deevana.com ID," but they
don't make it easy. I guess they expect you to put something on your business
card like, "Deevana ID: danorton", but that's pointless for people who don't
know who "deevana" is. I think they need to set it up so that you can get to
your profile by making it part of the URL, such as www.deevana.com/~danorton .
Once they do that, people can easily put the URL in E-mail, their printed
resumes and business cards. That would be a great way for them to get
incidental promotion. Until then, most people who hit the site will be those
who receive direct promotional material -- a small fraction of the potential
otherwise.
Another complaint is that there doesn't seem to be a way to delete image or
sound files, once you've specified them. I'm sure once they realize this that
it will be corrected.
