Question:
I have upon occasion written resumes for friends, co-workers, and family.
I have recently been considering going into the "business" of resume
writing. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction
for obtaining information to get started.
Answer:
-I've been writing resumes for years, and I can say that if you feel
confident in your ability to write effective resumes, your first step
ought to be placing a classified ad in your local paper. Depending on
the circulation of your community's daily, this might be pricey at first.
But you will be surprised at the number of calls you get!
One tip: WHen someone calls, set up an appointment IMMEDIATELY! Don't
have someone take a message and say you'll get back to them later; the
business is highly competitive, and you have to "grab" customers when you
get them.
-Most resume writers to charge a flat fee of around $30.
I've found that I make more that way than hourly but only when I have
the client do a little homework (what exactly do you want to do? why
should you be paid to do it?) It takes my about an hour to do a
quality res. so it works out.
PS - Have you priced some of the job placement agencies? I worked for
one and they charged around $150. That, IMO, is robbery. And I was
the guy doing the writing.
