Question:
what should a personal statement(for Nursing grad school admissions)
include? I need tips on writing my personal statement
Answer:
Various programs will ask you to write about various topics. Look carefully at
the application instructions to see to what extent a particular program wants
autobiographical information or a summary of your professional qualifications.
A clear statement of your goals and interests and how the particular program for
which you are writing the statement fits in to those is always helpful.
If you are going into the program with an idea of the sort of research you are
interested in doing, a description of that will help the program assess the fit
between your interests and abilities and theirs.
If you are applying to a graduate program which offers different specializations
(e.g., the Nursing program where I work has three different tracks: Clinical
Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practioner, and Women's Health Nurse Practioner),
a specific mention of which specialization you wish to pursue is also a good
idea.
I think it's useful to think of the personal statement in a graduate
application as something akin to a cover letter sent with your resume when
job-hunting. It's an opportunity to distinguish yourself from the other
applicants in the pool and to highlight the reasons why the program should want
you as a student.
