creating Resume in .doc format?

Question:
I have created a resume in word 97 but it puts it in a .wps format, and need it in .doc format. Cannot locate or get free advice on how to save as a .doc format, and that is the way all employers are asking it to be transmitted to them. Can anyone help me?

Answer:
I don't have Word97 - I use Word XP (2002). In Word XP, open the resume file. Click on File Save As At the bottom of the saving window is a box for Save as Type and on the right is an arrow for a drop down menu. Choose Word DOC file type. If you are actually not using WORD, but rather WORKS, you may or may not be able to save as a DOC file type. Keep in mind that even if you do save a a DOC file type, DOC formats can vary from Word Processor to Word Processor. For Example, even though Corel Word Perfrect and Microsoft Word use DOC file types by default, each is formatted (coede) differently and conversions must be made when opening one programs file in the other program.
