Question:
I am interested in writing my own job resume and I would like to know how
to do it. I'm a beginner with the computer and would also like to know if
there is any freeware that can be downloaded in reference to job resume
formats. I currently have Word 97 and Corel Wordperfect7.
Answer:
- If you search from yahoo.com using the keywords resume help, or resume, you
will find several sites for this purpose. Here is one.
http://www.free-resume-tips.com/
- this website is for Windows 98 discussion only. I
would suggest using a search engine to look for "job resume software".
Or go to one of the computer magazine sites like www.zdnet.com or
www.pcworld.com. They have lots of software for downloading, and maybe
they have what you are looking for.
- Let me apologize for those who may have sounded just a tad bit unkind. This
is a Windows 98 list, and it emphasizes setup problems. If you are using
Windows 98 and you wanted to setup a program so you could work on a resume,
I think your post was all right. It also received a few responses, and that
means it worked (and isn't that the important thing).
Welcome to the world of Windows, and please keep this group in mind when/if
you do need help with a computing problem relative to Windows 98.
Incidentally, most of the major word processing programs, Word, WordPerfect,
WordPro, etc., have excellent resume' templates. One of them should work for
you very nicely. In fact, I believe that Microsoft Words 2000 (if not other
versions) has a resume' tool.
- I'm not clear whether you are asking for computer/applications support, or
stylistic/strategic advice.
Word 97 has a template for doing resumes. That would get you started.
The MSN home page, most of the time, has a very nice link to articles on
resume writing. The homepage is www.msn.com, and look around. Since the
content changes several times a day, don't be discouraged if it isn't there
the first time you look. (The "Find a Job" standard link on that page also
pulls together data from a large number of online job banks and could be
quite useful. It has a lot of useful tips on job hunting.)
Possibly the best job board online is www.careerpath.com. (They're second
largest at the moment. A lot of people like Monster better, but the
ads/postings seem to be much staler.)
- to use Word 97 to a resume. Open Word, click File, click new,
click the Other Documents tab, and choose what kind of look you want your
resume to have.
I prefer Contemporary, but it's a matter of personal choice.
Do keep your resume down to one page. I don't waste time reading the
fluffed ones. I don't think too many other employers do either.
If you want me to interview you, you have to tell me what work experience
you have had in the last 5 years, what education that you have after high
school (don't bother with a tech firm if you didn't complete high school),
what team and charity activities you have (yes, I am looking for a team
player) and what community activities you have ( political party, advisory
groups etc.)
My best employees are those that have graduated from university or technical
school, have played amateur or professional sports, believe in a better
world and spend some of their time helping get there, and have a commitment
to helping their community run well. I also prefer married people over
single persons given that both persons are similarly qualified.
The person that only has time to work, ends up being a negative influence at
work.
