Question:
I have been a nurse (RN) for a year and find int necessary to change jobs.
I am having a tough time writing a resume can anyone give me some pointers?
I've been both a Staff Nurse and a Charge Nurse on a 23 bed ADRD unit in a
Skilled Nursing and Rehab facility.
Answer:
- Try to book, "Resumes for Dummies" (no insult intended). It has several
different resume formats to chose from and tons of good advice that is easy to
understand. I've used it myself!!
- if you have Microsoft Works, there is a resume template in there -
that can help you generate a resume quickly and easily. I'd still get
the a resume handbook such as the one suggested above, however.
- One of the things I do for extra money [and I'm not looking/soliciting for
work here] is write/re-write resumes, mostly for folks in the health care
field. The book I use [and I have looked at/reviewed most] exclusively is:
Tom Jackson's The Perfect Resume. One of the things I note about most
person's resumes [and I have read a lot of them when in administrative
positions] is that
1. spelling errors
2. error when changing tenses
3 absence or minimal use of power adjectives
4. not clearly, concisely describing one's capabilities and/or skills .
Jackson's book helps w/ #'s 3 & 4 in that he guides the reader to closely evaluate who they are and what they
have done. Good editing and computerized spell check will help #'s 1 & 2.
If one is willing to do the work, it really shows in the resume. And yes, it
does make a difference!!!
