Question:
i finally tried out Napster. I was quite dissapointed. Either the
quality of tunes were substandard, or, the tunes ended prematurely, yet the
connections appeared to not have failed prematurely. Did i just have a bad
night?
And WOW, talk about LEACHES .. before i figured out what i was doin in
there, 5 or 6 uploads were occuring. I felt like my privacy was invaded.
I tried asking questions but it appeared no one wanted to give answers, they
just wanted files. However, it is a great place to visit if u want to sample
some stuff before purchasing. But even so, is it legal for me to download
and sample, even if that item is probably copyrighted and even if my intent
is NOT to purchase if i am unhappy with those samples?
And what's with some people's modems? I'm a nice guy, but i have no
intention of sitting there for 2 hours and uploading an "indie" song that
took me 1 minute to legally download off mp3.com .. i tried typing that to
the user i was uploading to but like i said, no one reads those chat
messages. So i disconnected. How rude huh?
Should i be posting a message like this in here? And ... is there a
website for Napster?
Any tricks, suggestions or comments on how to navigate quickly thru Napster
would be
appreciated.
Answer:
- I suppose you feel like your "privacy is being invaded"
everytime you connect to the Internet?? You just never know what mean
and nasty things those "hackers" are doing to you while you're not
looking. That is the idea of Napster - you take, you give.
Who cares? Don't worry, FBI won't be knocking on your door if you
forget to erase that Prince MP3 you downloaded. Or are you worried
about mega-billion dollar recording industry losing out on your $12.95
you would have otherwise spent?
- I can't answer the questions about legality......................
Regarding failed downloads you are correct that Napster is a little
unreliable, but you can work with it. Specifically, when you get a transfer
error before the song finishes downloading you can right click on it and
select "resume download". Usually it will pick up where it left off. If
you close Napster, though, when you re-open it the incomplete file will not
appear in the transfer window (so don't close it). Be aware that sometimes
Napster will produce a transfer error even after it HAS successfully
downloaded a song so you need to play the song to determine whether or not
it's complete.
Regarding the quality of the files obviously that has nothing to do with
Napster, but with the participating individuals. When selecting a site for
a song note the bitrate of the MP3 - I always select 128kbps or higher and
so far the quality has been good.
Finally, regarding other people downloading files from YOUR computer you can
limit this in Napter's preferences window. You don't HAVE to let other
people access your computer. Slow uploads are annoying for those of us that
don't leave their computers ON all the time, but on the other hand Napster
only works because people are willing to share their files.
